There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino betting is illegal. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, investment sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is real of most borders.
The first Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, highlights 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel complex that features many luxuries aside from the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 gaming tables.
