There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling den gaming is illegal. Eight casinos are situated in a relatively small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are for all intents and purposes needed to pass, there are means around this, as is true of many borders.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling den, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel building that features many amenities accompanying the gambling den, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 table games.
