There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is not allowed. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income acquired from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a few controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; still, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are allegedly required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty slots and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the common gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel building that features many luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight gaming tables.
