There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall gambling is banned. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent spot, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are for all intents and purposes needed to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship gambling den, features 150 slot machine games and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that highlights numerous amenities accompanying the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight gaming tables.
