There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are situated in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest betting centers in Asia. The first Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga casino is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive vacation and hotel complex that highlights numerous amenities on top of the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
